The Panamera is the fourth model series to be produced by Porsche. Its looks alone will certainly divide opinion but there will be no doubt as to how effective it is at covering long distances with ease.
I know the BMW 5 series is due for replacement in the not too distant future, however I have driven what would probably be the most popular version – the 520d M-Sport for a while now and to be totally honest, it is one of the best cars I have ever driven, period. Which is saying something as I’ve driven Aston Martins, Porsches, AMG Mercedes to name but a few.
There has never been a 4x4 listed on the CarHost Car of the Month section, an SUV in the form of the fabulous Ford Kuga appeared last August. So, after spending 3 weeks driving Porsches Cayenne GTS down in Portugal I came up with a simple conclusion – it’s mighty impressive.
After numerous leaks and a terrific job by spy photographers, Mercedes used the North American International Motor Show in Detroit to officially debut the new E-class. Featuring more than 20 new or updated technologies, the company hopes that these advancements along with the bold new styling will help improve upon the sales success of one of the brand's most important models.
As an avid car fan for all of my life I have always disliked Jaguars and as you have probably noticed there are no Jaguars that have appeared in the CarHost Car of the Month section so far since we went online. In fact, it is fair to say I hated Jaguars, I thought they looked old fashioned, ugly and the quality was very....average.
We are now looking at our 16th CarHost Car of the Month – the Lexus IS-F. This is the first Lexus we have had on our list but it deserves its place no less than the other cars before it. This is Lexus’ answer to BMW’s remarkable M3 and considering this is their first effort at taking on the M3 it is quite simply...astounding.
I was undecided about what car should be the January 2009 CarHost Car of the Month but when a friend suggested the SL65 AMG Black Series I had no reason to disagree. Years ago Mercedes Benz had the reputation that their cars were safe, reliable and...for older people.
BMW has revealed a unique range of innovations for its new 7 series, codenamed the E65. This time around they have gone with a more subtle look from designer Adrian van Hooydonk to avoid the controversy stirred up by the previous Chris Bangle styled 7 series. Personally, I think the new 7 series is stunning and a huge leap forward from the previous model which I drove (and disliked considerably!).
As we reported in the August section of CarHost.ie news, seven-times world F1 champion Michael Schumacher had completed the testing process of the new Ferrari California. Well, with the California being unveiled at the Paris Motor Show last month, we feel it’s a good time to take a closer look at it by making it CarHost.ie’s Car of The Month for November.
This month, we’re looking at the BMW 3 series. The series has undergone something of a facelift, with over 2500 changes. However, it’s unlikely the biggest 3-series enthusiast will notice all of them. The most notable aspects of this facelift seem to be the stop-start function being missing from the six-cylinder cars, and the absence of a 323d.
Well CarHost.ie has been doing the Car of the Month since September 2007, and up to now we hadn’t included a Maserati. Well let’s put this right with the new Maserati Gran Turismo S, which looks to be a massive success!!! Having starred at the Geneva Motor Show, let’s take a closer look at what this variant on last year’s Maserati Gran Turismo offers.
Judging by the other cars listed in the CarHost Car of the Month section many people will be asking what the Ford Kuga is doing here because it is not a hot-rod and doesn’t hit 60 MPH in 4 and a bit seconds like most of the others do…so why is it here then?
A recent survey voted the Porsche 911 as the world’s most famous sports car, not surprising considering it has been around for 45 years! In that time Porsche has been on more ups and downs than a Wall Street stockbroker and at one stage was on the verge on bankruptcy. Porsche also tried to kill off the 911 with the Porsche 928 but fans still persisted. So I think it is fair to say that this months CarHost Car of the Month is the deserved Porsche 911 (997 Facelifted edition to be precise).
Ok, I know that the Ferrari 612 has been with us for a while now (since 2004) but it still hasn't diminished my desperate desire to own one of these cars. This month's CarHost Car of the Month is the Ferrari 612 HGTC – the HGTC bit meaning that there is performance upgrades included to sharpen up the four seater Ferrari's act, at a price….19,911.84 euros to be precise!
I'm happy to say that May is here! Hopefully that will mean warmer Irish weather (unlike last summer!) which in turn will make driving from A to B a pleasurable experience for all the petrolheads out there. This months CarHost COTM is the well deserved Nissan GT-R and to be quite honest you don't need perfect driving conditions to enjoy this, unlike say an old rear engined 911 which with its rear wheel drive would quite literally try to kill you if you are brave/stupid enough to take one out for a fast blast on wet B-roads, because this Nissan is four wheel drive.
In our News section last month we posted spy pics of the new Lamborghini LP560 which were taken earlier in the year, since then I am happy to say I have seen this car in the flesh….and loved it! Many of my friends were wondering why a self confessed die hard “Lambo” fan like me had waited until April until one showed up in the CarHost Car of the Month, to answer this I would simply just say I was waiting until I got to the Geneva Motor show…

The Audi R8 is the car Audi have built to take on the 911, is largely made from aluminium and was first unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show in 2003 badged Audi “Le Mans”. Naturally there are other reasons why Audi have built this car, it is worth mentioning that they have won Le Mans for the last 4 years running and are showing a very strong interest in winning over a few BMW drivers in the process by putting strong emphasis on their cars being “drivers” cars….a tag so often linked with cars from BMW, hence the RS6 et al.
At first glance, the DBS comes across as little more than a DB9 ‘special edition' with a loud Kahn bodykit and a few extra horses under the hood. However Aston Martin is adamant that the DBS is a completely different car, at least in character and feel, if not styling. In fact, the DBS has all the ingredients for a brutal sports car rather than a Grand Tourer: a hand built V12 engine with 510 horsepower, upgraded suspension from the DB9, ceramic brakes, huge 20” tires that are 245/35 at the front and 295/30 at the rear and a stability control system with a track mode.
The exceptional qualities of the AMG V12 engine resulted in it being singled out at the "International Engine of the Year Awards 2004": in the "Best Performance Engine" category, the 450-kW/612-hp AMG power unit was crowned the winner, beating off a strong field of 70 competitors from Europe, the US and Japan.
The new Alpina B3 made its official debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2007. It is based upon BMW's fabulous 335i however, power is raised to 360 BHP and torque is a colossal 368lb ft available between 3800 and 5000 rpm. It is worth bearing in mind that Alpina BMW's only come in Automatic so they are a totally different type of car to drive than the M-powered BMW's.
